CAE Sponsors Mangrove Planting in Support of UAE Climate Action Initiative

23 September 2023 17:17 | Canadian Business Council Abu Dhabi (Administrator)

Early on a balmy Sunday morning in September, a group of 30 people from CAE, the Canadian Business Council and the Canadian Embassy gathered for a briefing on Yas Beach in Abu Dabi.  Their mission, to help the UAE achieve their country-wide initiative to plant one hundred million mangrove trees by 2030 as announced at COP26. Mangroves, the only evergreen forests in the Gulf, are able to sequester massive amounts of carbon - over 300kg CO2 per mangrove - in their average lifetime. This is three times more than what rainforest can do per square meter.

CAE sponsored the activity, which included canoeing to the site and planting one hundred Sqm of mangrove saplings. The investment included growing the seeds for 12 to 18 months which increases the probability of plant survival to over 90%. Over the morning, about eighty new mangroves were planted.

“Sustainability is at the core of CAE’s values. Events like the mangrove planting in the UAE further our commitment and action in the fight against climate change.” said Helene V. Gagnon, Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Vice President, Stakeholder Engagement, CAE.

Sustainability is integral to what CAE is as a company and how our organization makes a difference in the world. For more information, read our FY23 Annual Activity and Corporate Social Responsibility Report.
